Kisima: The Reading Well to Read Well.

Kisima means “Well” in Kiswahili, and as used in this project, it has two meanings. 

As a noun, it means a Watering Place, a spa, or an abundant source: a well of information, and as an adverb, it means – in a good or satisfactory way, or in a thorough manner.

The Kisima Reading Well is designed to help children become better readers, equipping them with reading skills to develop a lifelong appreciation for reading and learning. 

Kisima Community Library: Rafikistry believes in enhancing lives. In line with this belief, the community library serves as a crucial resource, offering access to books, educational materials, and workshops. This Library aims to foster learning, personal growth, and development, empowering individuals to transform their lives through knowledge and self- improvement

Impact Pathways

We are deeply committed to nurturing a lifelong love for literature and language. Our reading sessions are carefully designed with age-appropriate texts tailored to their grade levels while their progress is regularly monitored. Learners also have access to a variety of storybooks that encourage a love for reading, improve their literacy skills and spark imagination and creativity.

READING SESSIONS

Our reading sessions are carefully designed with age-appropriate texts tailored to their grade levels while their progress is regularly monitored. Learners also have access to a variety of storybooks that encourage a love for reading, improve their literacy skills and spark imagination and creativity.
At the Kisima Community Library, rather than simply giving answers, our volunteers guide learners through the homework support program by helping them with their assignments. During school terms, children are also welcome to visit the library after school for continued academic support.sig.

Fridays at the library are dedicated for life skill sessions designed to support their personal growth and well-being. Covering topics such as: Personal hygiene, emotional resilience and other practical life lessons, these sessions empower children with knowledge and skills that help them make informed decisions and build healthy habits.

To address the consistent trend of lower library attendance among young girls, we intentionally host a girls library day during the holiday season. Through tailored sessions in coding, STEM and mentorship, we empower girls to believe in their potential, pursue their ambitions and challenge limitations often placed on them by society.

Our environmental sessions introduce children to the importance of caring for the world around them. Through engaging stories and interactive discussions, children gain knowledge about environmental conservation and sustainability. By teaching them everything they need to know about caring for our planet, we help them understand the direct impact they have on their surroundings and encourage them to protect it.

To celebrate the end of holiday programs, we try to organize an educational trip for the children once in a while before they go back to school. Through these programs, Kisima Community Library creates a nurturing space where children can learn, grow and thrive both inside and outside the classroom
